Georgian Houses in New Town

After the centre of Edinburgh and the area near the castle became overcrowded with the rich and the poor living side by side, the rich decided to move to a different part of town, on the other side of Princess street, build new, elegant houses and live happily every after.

Scones

Scones are connected traditionally with England, Scotland, and Ireland, but nobody knows which country invented it. However, the first known mention of a scone that was printed is from the translation of The Aenaid (1513) written by a Scottish poet named Gavin Douglas. The one in the picture was bought at a charity shop that also runs a small cafe.

Arthur's Seat - possible location for Camelot

Arthur's Seat is often mentioned as one of the possible locations for Camelot, the legendary castle and court of the Romano-British warrior-chief, King Arthur. It seems more likely, however, that the name is a corruption of the Gaelic ard na saigheid, meaning 'hill of the archers'.

Tradition has it that it was at the foot of Arthur's Seat, covered by the forest of Drumselch, that Scotland's 12th-century king David I of Scotland encountered a stag while out hunting. Having fallen from his horse and about to be gored, he had a vision of a cross appearing between the animal's antlers, before it inexplicably turned away, leaving him unharmed. David, believing his life had been spared through divine intervention, founded Holyrood Abbey on the spot. The burgh arms of the Canongate display the head of the stag with the cross framed by its antlers.

New Town

The building on the corner is where you will be staying in Edinburgh. It's clean and well organised.  The house on the left is an older Georgian house. Georgian houses have flat front and the windows, just like you see in the picture. They are typical of New Town, the part of Edinburgh where you will be based.
